The Regiment in the movie is a combination of several Highland Regiments so as not to offend anyone in particular. If I recall correctly, the Author was a Gordon Highlander.

There's been several threads pertaining to this movie. Here's one:

As has been stated, the regiment protrayed is a fictional amalgam of different highland regiments and wears the Brown/ Hunting Scott tartan in the Modern color scheme.
Cordially,

Correct. James Kennaway served with the Camerons and the Gordons, but it was the latter's officer's mess that inspired the story. Note that Kennaway wrote the screenplay as well as the novel, and no doubt the reference Sir Alan makes at the cocktail party about the "Camerons up at Inverness" was a veiled one to his former service, along with Dusty singing "A Gordon for Me" and the "cheesy tune" Cock o' the North.
