How would you describe the music hall stereotype Scotsman?

Jock... I hope that you don't think a Startburst commercial has the ability to ruin a century's worth of work for Scot's and lifeguards alike... it's all in good fun.

Yes indeed it is all good fun and I would have it no other way. However, and this goes back to the music hall stereotype that makes us, particularly perhaps older Scots, cringe.

Alright some one asked me to describe the music hall stereotype Scot.Kilt worn below the knee, overly large sporran usually worn too low with the bottom hanging way below the selvage of the kilt, overly large kilt jacket, or way too small, huge bonnets, think Laural and Hardy and often with a bad Scots accent and usually portraying a drunk.

Now, without wishing to be rude to anyone, but I do need to respectfully make this point-----have a good look at the pictures published here of people wearing the kilt and maybe you will see why some of the pictures published are met with a stony silence from me and others! Make no mistake there are many here that do get their kilt and attire right and there are those that are wanting and willing to learn and that is just fine.BUT-----------------------!

Other cultural stereotypes are similarly reviled on this side of the water by civilized members of the group being caricatured...and sometimes those caricatures are funny, too...funny depends largely on context, I think, but 99% of the time I agree with you. The other 1% is probably the Scottish equivalent of Chris Rock.

Fortunately there isn't too much Clan MacTablecloth here at XMTS!

...but I will think twice before going out in public in Scotface .

I've seen the commercial on one of my children's television shows. My wife and I loved the castle. We took the commercial to be as it was meant to be, just in good fun. However, that being said, I can understand how it could offend some. I spent a good portion of my career working in other countries. The perception was always the same. Americans were considered to be rude, uncouth, and trigger happy. After several weeks in a location, we were able to disprove the first two. Unfortunately, when you are running a protection mission and one is armed to the teeth,...you just can't convince them they are in error about their third premise.

Sorry, I digress. You will now be returned to the regularly scheduled thread.
