Designing a cap badge and getting it approved would be a long task, but one which might be worth looking into. I'll have to do some poking around on this subject. Getting anything pushed through National in the way of uniform changes will be a daunting task to say the least.

Technically you would be designing another "universal" cap badge

That should be much easier to approve. Unless you do want it to become an official part of the uniform.

The Rosettes/Cockades worn on a Balmoral are common enough, but yes they are a matter of taste. Anything could be used though to visually bring the size up to the 2" proportions of a typical clan badge; tartan ribbon or bow maybe? Oooooh, even a brass, copper, pewter or silver disk could be mounted behind the cap badge to achieve the size. Sort of like the Army Infantry Disk

Yes, but being a Venture Crew we have a pretty broad range of what we can adopt as our uniform. The restriction being, of course, the in ability to add or delete from the official uniform. But, lets not delve too deeply into this subject as it has been hashed over quite extensively in other threads.

As for the designing of a cap badge as a patrol badge I think that would work as a legitimate option.

I hate to be one to quote rules & regs, but...

Check the Insignia Guide folks. The gold pin (or 'large standard metal pin', No. 00017) is intended to be worn by the youth - mainly on the campaign hat or the expedition hat. The pewter pin (or 'adult universal pin', No. 50150, per Scoutstuff) is intended for adults.

Neither is really big enough to be equivalent in size to a Scottish cap badge.

If your Venture Crew is looking for something to wear as a uniform hat badge outside of those options, have them design their own.

Venture Crews do have a wide latitude as far as their own unit's uniform is concerned (including no uniform). They just can't add to/subtract from the official Venturing uniform (forest green shirt/gray pants).

That's the way I have always read the guidelines too. I didn't realize that the gold pin was youth only, but I did know about the pewter adult pin being intended for adults.

This insignia (balmoral style cap badge) is not intended for our Crew, it is for me personally. It is not intended to be worn with a uniform, but to be worn to show my support for Scouting in much the same way that one wears a clan badge to show support of (and alliegence to) one's clan. The BSA has set rules for uniforms, including Venture Crews, and we aim to stay within those rules. Hope this clears up any misunderstanding of my initial inquiry.
