anybody make a sporran for this cantle?

I bought, fairly cheaply on Ebay, one of the 1953 MOD "Culloden" brass sporran cantles, and I'd like to find somebody who could make a sporran like this for it:

Any experiences or leads you can share? Or are any of you sporranmakers who could do this?

    Thanks! Richard

I have several of these sporrans. Some retain the issue pouch of sueded pigskin, meant to be dressed with pipeclay, but mine have not been. The other has a black leather pouch that was made by Janet Eagleton.

Matt Newsome had a replacement pouch made for his brass-cantled sporran by Lamar Britt. That's probably your best bet.

    Cordially,

    David

Lamar Britt, of Ferguson Britt sporrans, should be able to do that. I traded for a sporran a few years back that had a bag on it that looked similar to the one in your pictures.

I gave it to Lamar and he replaced the bag for me. Much nicer leather, and it's a bit larger, to boot. This is the same sporran cantle on the new bag.

If you are interested PM me your contact details and I'll put you in touch with him.

Yes thanks that's exactly what I was looking for.

I noticed that Mr Britt altered the arrangement of the tassels, taking the two flanking tassels off the face of the sporran and moving them to the sides of it, just like in many of the old 18th century sporrans seen in museums.

That pair of photos suggested something I'd not thought about before: how the three tassels on the face of modern Day Dress sporrans came about.

I would strongly recommend that you check with our very own Turpin before you do anything. He's pretty good and very reasonable, and he's a nice guy to boot who does a great Address to the Haggis.

I'm sure that both Lamar and Turpin will be able to do a great job with your cantle. The only thing that comes to my mind is that sporrans with working hinged cantles are Lamar's stock-in-trade, and he has an awful lot of experience making bags to work in tandem with that arangement. That said, I still think that both of these gentlemen would be able to do a great job!

...on the subject of how the three tassles originated, I've heard mention of them arising from the two ends of the drawstring and the end of the closure on the covering flap of old belt-pouch style sporrans, but I really don't know that we have a solid historical base to support that assertion.

I was actually going to suggest having Lamar Britt do it as well. Much as I'd like to see the cantle, I think he's the right person for the result you want.
