Well one of my friends said why buy a sword I will only use probably use once. He said get a Navy sword so that when I make Chief I would have it to use for ceremonies, I will probably have a couple or more before I retire. I checked with a Chief to see if the saber is one of the uniform items that can be worn outside of a uniform and he said yes.

Here is the sword setup -

What do you guys think? To far away from "normal" look?

Check the uniform regs. IIRC, Chiefs are authorized dress cutlasses, not the Naval Officer's sword.

Seriously though, I think if you are required to be armed then that is a fine looking piece of hardware to hang off your hip.

I have the $50 brass basket claymore. I bought it to carry in the clan parade and that's all it's good for. Well, you could lay two of them down on the floor and dance over them.

I have friends that re-enact fighting. They don't even buy CAS Iberia or CAS Hanwei (Paul Chen) swords any more. Richard said a couple of weekend ago they broke FIVE of them, in one weekend.

If you want a blade for actual contact, demo stage swordplay, you're going to have to pay at least a couple hundred bucks...

Baltimore Knife and Sword makes good stuff...but bluidy expensive.

If I ever get into taking swipes at other guys, as part of the re-enactment thing, I will probably buy their "Tower Hanger" which is pretty darned close to period correct for my guild and something like almost affordable. However, a pretty blade for a wedding, it ain't.

In Canada, Hemrick is supposed to make good stuff, but his turnaround time is usually a couple of months.

The latest uniform regs removed all mention of swords for Chiefs in full dress. When I had asked a Chief about it he said the main reason was the cutlass doesn't go through the coat openings on the dress blue jacket. When I asked if they had stop wearing any sword for ceremonies he said that they had moved over to the saber. Doing searches the only thing on the cutlass I can find is that it was declared obsolete in 1949.

He did say the cutlass is still given as a gift just not worn.

If you can find any regs that mention the wear of a cutlass I would appreciate it.

My understanding is that the only Non-Commissioned Officers in the U.S. military who rate swords are Marine NCOs. Perhaps that's changed and I'm just not aware.
