Had your studies centered around Science as opposed to liberal arts, I would recommend a more traditional suit or the Kilt outfit, which by the way, is snappy. Since it is an English class, anything goes, even c.

Given what you've said previously about the usual dress at such affairs I think the leather suit would be a huge mistake. I just have a hard time taking a leather suit seriously and I think your colleagues and your students, who've accepted individual pieces of this outfit in an academic setting might be a bit put off by the entire ensemble. They might feel you don't take the ceremony seriously.

The kilt outfit, on the other hand, is restrained and dignified and looks like you are taking great pains to look your best for your students' special day. I think it suits you better anyway.

I concur with the comments about the tie and the hose. A tie that brings out one of the less prominent colors of the tartan would be a better choice and one thing I have learned in this forum is that hose tops should reach no higher than just above the broadest portion of the calf. You don't want to look like a Catholic school girl in knee socks and plaid skirt, do you?

I believe it was Jock who testified to the Japanese fascination with and knowledge of the kilt and all its appurtenances. He cautioned against wearing it in any other manner than that which is in keeping with Highland tradition and custom. I notice you're not wearing flashes and, while not everyone always wears flashes, that is just the sort of detail that might make them feel the outfit is incomplete.

Whatever you wear, though, have a good time and share the joy of your students and their families.
