Crossing the street
So I'm crossing the street, heading back to the office after lunch, and the guy in the work truck coming up the street pulls over and calls me over. I'm used to that; people seem to get lost around here a lot.
But, no, he wants to know what "this place" is. So I tell him, it's the USA offices of an international ministry.
And he says, "So does it have something to do with Scotland?"
Oh ... this is one of THOSE conversations ...
"No," I said, "I just felt like wearing a kilt today."
"Looks good," he replies.
What a nice ending to lunch.

Great answer. Sometimes it's far too easy for me to come off on the offensive when someone starts asking "those questions." Then again, I've been known to get miffed because after spending some time selecting my wardrobe people just look at me like, "Oh, Chuck's wearing one of his kilts again." I guess I'd complain if I were hung with a golden rope.
You played exactly on key. He was interested enough to be curious without being judgemental, and you were courteous enough to answer the question without making an issue of it.

This is the answer I give, too, being a non-Scot, myself. And people seem to accept this explanation.

My favorite is "I just don't like pants. Or trousers."
The smart ones (ladies) get it.
