I think that everyone's opinion on this depends a lot on context. Those living in Scotland, especially the Highlands, seem to be less inclined to wear another clan's tartan. I myself have no problem wearing my Lyndsay kilt around Edinburgh, and will likely wear it to the Royal Highland show as well. But later in the summer when I trek to the games in my ancestors' home town, I'll go in jeans. Part of the reason for that is because that trip will be a lot about discovering my Scottish identity, and perhaps developing or deepening a clan identity, so why show up dressed as something I'm not? Later in the summer when I go to attend games in California I'll wear whatever I have. Like I said, I think it's a lot about context.

I wear what I like . . .
It just so happens that my three favorite kilts (of the past few years, at least) are in tartans of my clan (Donnachaidh). However, if I were a member of a pipe band that utilized uniform tartan kilts, would I turn down the chance to play with such a band if I were to discover that they wore kilts in a tartan traditionally ssociated with a clan which was historically inimical towards my clan? Probably not. I don't live in Scotland, obviously, and my choice might be different if such an option were to arise in this latter situation. There are some tartans I doubt I would wear, but for the most part that's an expression of personal taste, relating to the color, the sett or just how I would look in such garb. Thanks to the powers that be for allowing human beings the luxury of personal taste. Even if it could possibly be argued that for some of us, most of our taste is in our mouths. . .

I have a lovely Barclay kilt of course, but I have a nice vintage Royal Stewart also which I have no guilt about wearing as a UK citizen. The only "other clan" kilt I have is a budget MacKenzie as that was the tartan of the Highland Light Infantry for which an ancestor of mine fought and died in WWI, and I bought it specifically to wear at Remembrance Sunday/Armistice Day events to commemorate him (I know most of that regiment wore trews as opposed to kilts, but kilts I think look smarter at such events).

As for me, and I would not try to speak for anyone else, I am proud to wear only the Ross Tartan. As a member of the Clan Ross Association tracing my line back to the Inverness area in the 1400's I could not see myself wearing any other.
Having said that, I have made three X-Kilts, one for each of my three children out of the digital ACU camouflage and will start on one for myself shortly.
Thanks to Alan H. for the work on his X-Kilt text, outstanding job!! Purchasing a Tartan kilt for children knowing that they will gro w out of in a short amount of time isn't very economically sound in today’s world.
