I haven't really broached the subject of epaulette styles with our jacket makers, but every Argyle we've had them make for us thus far has had a flat, cloth epaulette (or no epaulette, as requested).
I don't see any reason why a braided epaulette could not be supplied if requested, but, like you, I think Argyles look better with a flat cloth epaulette (or none at all).
