My dear friends – what an absolutely superb thing you have done! Thank you all from the bottom of my heart for your posts here, your PMs, your e-mails and your cards.

Yes, as Ali reported, I am back at home. A little tattered and torn, I admit, but with both legs intact thanks to the persistent talents of a fine Glasgow radiologist and the heroics of an Edinburgh surgeon and their dedicated teams. Recovery this time will be far more rapid and complete and I expect to be back to my beloved hill walking within a couple of months. Jock, Alex, Ali: would you care to join me? I’m thinking of the Corrieyairack as a light reintroduction and that’s just along the road from you, Jock. Perhaps June for the tiny flowers and the fine mist?

Now then, on the subject of tunneling, I think I should tell you that I am in Vancouver at the moment and the word here is that there is already a tunnel running under the border. It was formerly used for southward movement of compressed green stuff, but I understand that it is now heavily used for the northward transport of product from the rubber chicken factory near Bellingham. For confirmation of this, you will have to check with the owner, our blonde member from Ontario or BoldHighlander who, I hear, has the key to the secret southern door. And Jock, I will not be passing on my formula for woodashrinse, not even to Grant; that’s much too personal.

Well done Rex! I have not ever walked that route, but we used to drive it on a Sunday when there was no shooting or fishing to be done. Quite hair raising in places, I remember. We used to stop along the way for a picnic and view the magnificent surroundings. I am told it is un-navigable even by 4wd in places now. I visit the Laggan end from time to time still.

I am not sure that I am up to the 18 mile stroll, but most certainly I will be delighted to see you off ,or pick you up from either end, or whatever may be helpful. Early June would be fantastic! Not too many midges!

I was never on the road when it was drivable, Jock, but I've hiked it several times and twice o'nighted near the summit. There are some very challenging places even for the hiker, but the scenery is superb and you inevitably run into a herd of red deer or two. You know that it was a Wade Road, I'm sure.

An interesting side-trip is from the shepherd's cottage down into Glen Roy, but we'll leave that for another day.

Yes, that was my thought about early June, too. I hear that Ali has a great fear of those wee beasties
