I was just having fun with WVPiper.
I have heard all of the above makers pipes and I would be proud to own any of them. It is nice that we have enough makers in the world that we can have this discussion.
When I bought my pipes I just liked the way they sounded. Plus, I wanted a set that was a little different or unique. It seems that a lot of people buy what others tell them they should buy. And because of this they end up buying another set when their ear gets more trained.
The personal attention that Doug gave me confirmed that I wanted to buy from him. I didn't have too long of a wait for my pipes and in the end I got what I wanted, a great sounding instrument.
I have been told that even if a maker uses a cnc they have to do the finishing beading and combing by hand. So basically all the machine does is drill the bore and rough in the shape.
Cheers!

I own, and would buy again, both a set of McLellans and Gibsons. I would buy Athertons is a heartbeat. There are other that have been mentioned of great quality. I'm not a fan of MacCallums. I've seen too many that appear to be cheaper than they could be. But I don't hate them at all. They have quite a fan base.

I just bought (and am jonesing for) a set of McCallum AB3's, on the advice of my teacher. I've heard them at various Highland Games, I like the way they sound. Bought them from Piper's Dojo. Andrew checked his supplier, told me what was in stock, and shipped them out to me two days after I ordered them (last week Thursday).
Any day now I can sound as bad on pipes as I do on the practice chanter. Can't hardly wait.

I went with the McCallums, AB1 deluxe. Should be here in 2-3 weeks. Definitely look forward to starting this leg of the journey.

You'll be happy with them. McCallum sets the standard for customer service and their instruments are good, solid pipes. It is true that there are better out there, but I don't think anyone can beat McCallum in the same price point.
I just wish my McCallums could have the better-looking faux ivory they are now using! My student has a McCallum practice chanter and the sole has a lovely color to it that is much less stark white than my pipe fittings. I have the AB4 bling pipes.
If I had the chance to purchase all over again, the only change I would make is to start with Ezee Drone reeds. I went with MGs and they do sound very good, but they tend to moan and groan (trailing drones syndrome) and I don't get that with the Ezees I am now using. Could have saved a little money if I had known. Otherwise, no regrets.
Oh, get some good information on pipe maintenance while you still have the band to draw upon. I suggest a swab that you use on your blowstick and its stock every time you are done playing. Every single time. Don't leave a wet blowstick in your case for several days and come back to a crack like I did. Just swab the silly thing. FWIW, even though I admitted it was my own fault it cracked, McCallum sent me a replacement. That's what I mean about customer service. Other makers might well do the same, but I don't know for sure.
