These pictures illustrate how I think a kilt should be worn, as a piece of clothing, not as a venerated object, and I think that should be true even when you are wearing the kilt in a traditional manner. The members shown here look very comfortable with themselves in their kilts. When you don't come off as comfortable with what you are wearing, what you are wearing does not look good on you, modern or traditional.

Here are a few pics I've got kicking around the computer. I just got my first 2 kilts around Christmas last year, so I haven't had the time yet to collect any of the great deal of kit you need to really pull off the traditional look. So here goes:

One of the first times I wore my tartan kilt. This is on Christmas day. The stripy jumper was a gift and happened to go really well with the kilt. The tartan is Lyndsay.

Also Christmas day, I think. Long sleeve t shirts work well with kilts in my opinion. I have a black one that works well too.

Dressed for the cold at Loch Ness. And it was really freaking cold! Note the 14 hole Doc Martens.

Robert Burn's day with my kid. He's showing off the just-a-plain-white-button-up look and I've stuck a dark collared shirt under my Christmas jumper. Note the Docs this time are 3 hole. Docs and kilts go together like pb and j. And everything about that sentence shows that I'm not a real Scot.

The long sleeve t makes an appearance with the UK Workman. The kilt hose are a DIY job. And of course, Docs.

I'll wrap up with a look that was mentioned earlier in the thread, the untucked plain white t. We were just lounging around the house when we snapped this pic, but I won't be surprised if I head out like this once or twice when it warms up a bit this summer.

I've tried dressing up the UK a bit, with mixed results. I think you should be able to hit a "smart-casual" note, but the UK will never dress up more than a pair of jeans, in my opinion. The UK sits too low to convincingly tuck in a shirt without it blousing all over the place. Thoughts?

    Matt,

Great job! Looks like you're well on your way to a lovely Highland wardrobe.
The pics with your son are perfect (he's adorable, by the way! ) and it's splendid that you are teaching him to wear the kilt at such a young age.

    Regards,

    Brian

Playing around with combining a bowling shirt look with the kilt. Here it is -

I'm not sure how it turned out and I'm definitely not sure about the boots. The problem is that gillies seem to much and I can't seem to wrap my brain around athletic shoes with a kilt.

You've got the shirt but where are the bowling shoes...now there is a look I want to see with a kilt

It's been a long strange ride so far and I'm not even halfway home yet.

    Hey Drac-

How bout some longer socks? Personally, I think that's all that's missing, and you can do it with bowling shoes or boots.
