I think your friend there is not wearing the Murray of Atholl tartan. Here is a detail of the tartan.

Note the red stripe appears on every other blue ground and every green ground. This is not the case with his kilt.
The kilt looks to me to be the Armstrong tartan, which is one I also wear.
