    Question Elliot Tartan

Last night I was talking to a good mate of mine living down under, who happens to be an Elliot. To be honest he has never cared much for the looks of the Elliot tartan, but wants to get a kilt that honours his Border Reiver heritage & would be somewhat acceptable to his clan or at clan functions.

I told him I'd ask the rabble on his behalf for their opinions on a substitute tartan. So, what say you?

    Elliot Modern

    Elliot Ancient

Another Elliot tartan is the one shown in my avatar. Its the same tartan but the brown stripes have been replaced by red, making it a two-color tartan. Lady Chrystal made a double-box pleated kilt for me from this tartan and it looks quite nice.

Assuming your friend just doesn't want a blue tartan, I also suggest he look at several tartans that have a Border association. I logged on to Scotweb and the Scottish Tartan Authority and did a tartan search for "Border." About 6 or 8 tartans popped up. Several are business tartans, but there are several nice fashion tartans.

According to both tartans sites, there are two Border Reiver tartans. One is the well known black and white shepherd's check, and the other is a red tartan with black stripes. There is a also a Borderland tartan, and a few others.

I can sympathize with your friend though - I never really liked the Elliot tartan until I began to see its several different variations worn as a kilt. Now I've two Elliot kilts (one in the colors of my avatar and one in the ancient colors) and I'm thinking a third (in modern colors) may not be totally out of the question.

I'm sorry but I've always admired the colours of Elliott modern.

    Thanks Sir William
I don't know for certain if its just that he doesn't want a blue tartan or what, but I'll pass your suggestions on.

I do like the one in your avatar

He could go with a district tartan for the area the Elliots are from, such as the Roxburgh tartan. That's a nice traditional red & green design.

Or, he could wear a solid worsted or tweed kilt and avoid the tartan question altogether. And show his Elliot heritage with a cap badge.

Not only did I send him Sir William's suggestions, but yours as well.

Okay, I thought I'd post a visual representation of the suggested tartans that I have emailed to my friend in Australia:

    Elliot Clan/Family Ancient

    Roxburgh District

    Border Reivers Check Modern

    Scottish Borders Borderland Modern

    Scottish Borders Dress Modern

I also sent links to the tweed examples found at the Scottish Tartan Museum site.

I hope he doesn't feel too overwhelmed by the choices
(...I personally think he should go with the Elliot Ancient above w/ the all red stripes).

Here is Lady Chrystel working on my double-box pleated kilt. It'll give you a good idea what the tartan looks like. The blue is actually more of a deep royal blue and not quite as light as in the photos.

I'm going to forward those pics to my friend so he can get a better idea of that tartan.

There are so many variations and possibilities that your friend's head will spin. The iScottish register of tartans is the best place to look, unlike some advice they are not trying to sell you anything, and are the definitive experts.

    Trust this helps!

    Kind Regards,

    David.
