Kilt in Gunn modern/ancient

I recently did a big research of my family, and found myself best linked to the clan Gunn. I have always been told I was a stewart as a kid, but my family was only a sept of the Stewarts due to the location of their homes.

Now I am about to honor my real bloodline with a kilt in Gunn. The big question is: Should I go for the modern or ancient tartan? I have heard that the ancient looks very nice, but have only seen the modern.

I all depends on if you want very dark colours (modern)

or brighter colours (ancient)

note: The Flower of Scotland is very similar but has the red stripe through the blue instead of the green.

Another alternative is weatherd or muted Gunn soft greys blues and browns.

See Lochcarron as they do all three tartans, in 13 oz weight.

I usually wear dark kilts, but this might be the day I change all that.

I did look at Lochcarron, but the samples are so small. I can really get the big picture of a kilt with those small patches. About the weight, I could only find modern and ancient in medium weight. On the other hand, I will most likely get a strome (the heavier the better).

I wear a Gunn Weathered (Tewksbury) and love it. I don't know how to do the linky thingy but if you go to the "Picture forum" and look at the "Stratford Kilt Night 3/27/2010 I'm the dude wearing the balmoral, there are a few good pic's of the kilt and on my 'puter the colours are close.

Very nice kilt, especially the pleating is superb! Acutally think it would be a bit too bright on me.

If you're having a difficult time finding good photos of Gunn (ancient colours), just Google "flower of scotland kilt" and you'll see dozens of great photos.

Flower of Scotland is identical to Gunn (ancient) except for a single red line which has been moved from one place to another. I used to play in a pipe band which wore Flower Of Scotland tartan and a few times when we ordered kilts for new members they would come in Gunn ancient by mistake (the tartans are that similar).

For several years Flower of Scotland was the most popular Kilt Hire tartan in Scotland. It has lovely pastel greens and blues.

Here's the Misty Isle Pipe Band as they appeared in 2004 in their Flower of Scotland kilts.

Move that red line in the blue area over to the green area and Bob's your uncle.

I like the colours. This is going to be quite a dilemma. It's not as bright as I would have expected, so this is going to be a tough call.

I'm going to have to disagree with Richard here. At least one mill (House of Edgar) uses a different color blue to weave their Flower of Scotland tartan, so you probably shouldn't base your decisions on that comparison. That being said, the contrast between the blue and the green, IMHO, is what makes or breaks tartans like Gunn, Mackay, etc. I'd urge you to consider the Gunn tartan in House of Edgar's "muted" color scheme. It's not as pastel as the Lochcarron Ancient color scheme, not as "Crayola-ish" as the House of Edgar Ancient color scheme- it's a really nice mix of a recognizable blue and olive green with maroon for the red. You should be able to find pics on the web by googling, but before you invest $500+/- for a kilt make sure to order a swatch (regardless of what tartan you decide on).
