Kilt in Gunn modern/ancient

Since we're on the subject of Clan Gunn.

I was informed this morning via Ted Gunn, Eastern Canada Commissioner that the president of Clan Gunn Society of North America, Royce Perry of Arlinton Texas, passed away suddenly in the early hours of Apr. 1.

Royce was a Vietnam Vet and had been commissioner of the Texas branch of CGSNA for a number of years and had been very active in Clan affairs. He assumed the role of President earlier this year.

Condolences to family and friends.

My condolences to them all. Always a loss when a good man dies. And from whan I've heard it is a good clan with good people (as with almost all scots).

But I still can't take my mind off the Lochcarron fabric I am about to get kilted in ...

Flower of Scotland is identical to Gunn (ancient) except for a single red line which has been moved from one place to another. I used to play in a pipe band which wore Flower Of Scotland tartan and a few times when we ordered kilts for new members they would come in Gunn ancient by mistake (the tartans are that similar).

For several years Flower of Scotland was the most popular Kilt Hire tartan in Scotland. It has lovely pastel greens and blues.

Here's the Misty Isle Pipe Band as they appeared in 2004 in their Flower of Scotland kilts.

Move that red line in the blue area over to the green area and Bob's your uncle.

to give a direct comparison, here is my Gunn ancient:

personally, I think its a beautiful tartan, maybe biased... slightly less pastel than Flower of Scotland (of course will depend somewhat on the mill) I believe the fabric in mine is from Heather Mills in Selkirk. (Kilt made by Hector Russell)

Nice photos sax&pipes!

Yes I can see that the colours of your kilt are quite different, and also a smaller sett size. That Misty Isle Pipe Band sometimes recieved Gunn kilts by mistake which were identical in colour, sett size, etc and could be worn in the band with almost nobody noticing.

By the way, since your are in the Netherlands, have you got the CD

(oh no... I can't find it and I don't speak that language...something like)

It's got great cuts of the local bagpipes in Belgium and the Netherlands.

I don't have the CD, but I will ask my PM here, I'm sure he will know. I'm not really that familiar with all the local varieties of pipes (only that I know there are some). I'm actually only living here, but from New Zealand originally. Still I'm fascinated by all the different pipes throughout Europe.

I'm also very keen on bagpipe-making, and am planning a trip to visit a maker here who specialises in all the pipes from the low countries. Maybe he knows about the CD.

Yes, I didn't really notice the sett-size difference. It is a heavyweight tartan (I would have thought if anything, it would make it bigger). Still, I think its a great looking tartan!

Ancient is absolutley the way to go now.
Good bright colours, and a very nice pattern. Will order it as soon as I can, but will first need a band kilt.

I did look at Lochcarron, but the samples are so small. I can really get the big picture of a kilt with those small patches. About the weight, I could only find modern and ancient in medium weight. On the other hand, I will most likely get a strome (the heavier the better).

My Kilt (in the Ancient colours) is heavy-weight 16oz and the price was better than for lighterweights. It was from Hector Russell (and I've just checked but they are no longer on special of 199GBP, but still cheaper than a mediumweight). They were good to deal with, although they got a bit confused about the delivery date, and had to change where they sent it (I was attending a wedding in another country), but they did this without any quips. I also like the partlicular colours in their kilt, quite different to the Lochcarron.
