So how much different is that than the Murray of Atholl tartan? (I was finally able to get my eyes to discern that there is actually tartan there, but I can't concentrate on it very well.)

Both are based on the Black Watch (government sett), both difference it with a series of red stripes. But the placement of those stripes is different.

If it was a single red overstripe it would remind me of the government sett tartan that both Stuart Reid & Ian Macpherson McCulloch wrote of the 43rd/42nd wearing mid-to-late 18th century...

...though I would hazard to say that they never wore it quite as fetchingly

.....and here was I thinking it must be expensive when there was a need to skimp on the length of the kilt.
