four years ago I thought I'd make a "proper" kilt and looked for instructions online. I made the equivalent of a 5 yard casual kilt in a cotton tartan (Black Watch) I spent too many hours pressing it (before every time I wore it...) I decided that was it and went out and bought some wool.
I made a nice 6 yarder with a solid green fabric and wore that up until a few months ago.
I now have a few modern styled kilts and a PV 8 yarder in the Maple leaf Tartan and a 4 yard box pleat in Black Watch. Beyond that there's some Gordon regimental fabric waiting and some Isle of Skye on order... (this will stop eventually right?)
Of course it will stop eventually! You don't think you are immortal, do you?
I was 58 when I wore a belted plaid at a ren fair, loved it, found this place, found SWK thrifties, and expect to be wearing kilts till they bury me.

Well I was 38 when I first donned the Kilt, a DIY that the mother in law made with a matching wool skirt for my wife in a still unknown tartan, then again at 40, for this years local Burns' supper, to humour my wife, her mom made me a super lightweight BW tartan that barely covered the wee bits, and decided that if this was going to be a regular thing then I'd better get a proper one in the closet, so I purchased a BW 16oz. 5yd. casual that was from Scotweb, out of the discount bin, that happened to be my exact size, and am waiting on a Campbell Anc. 16oz. HoE, Custom handmade 8yd, to be here by the end of next month. And am frothing with anticipation.
Along with a plethora of accessories, and jackets, and shirts, and hose.......... it truly is a nasty addiction!!!

Hey all,
My first "kilt" was a very inaccurate one I wore at my local Renaissance Festival from around 1997 to 1999 so I was 15 or so. My first real kilt was a few weeks ago at the Loch Norman games.

I was 6 years old when I first wore a kilt. It was made from a bit of old worsted Clan Chattan tartan that my Grandmother had. She often made kilts for me and my male cousins when we were young, since we grew so darn fast. I remember her stuffing her ottomans and couch cushions with the older, discarded wee kilts! She was something else.
Aye,
