My first sporran was an economy semi-dress model from the Celtic Croft. As I established my own look and my knowledge of kilt and kit grew I found myself less and less happy with it. The main problem was that the cantle just wasn't up to snuff. I was considering purchasing a replacement when it occured to me that perhaps this would be a good opportunity to see if the cantles that Jerry V. sells at Stillwater Kilts could fix the one I had.
The price was right (about $19 + shipping if I recall) so I ordered a chrome cantle and tassel bell set plus a couple of other sample cantles Jerry had.
As usual with Stillwater my order arrived promptly within just a couple of days
Here is the semi-dress sporran with the original cantle
And here it is with the new cantle and the leather backing piece that came with the set
I think this is a vast improvement and I have taken to wearing this sporran again.
Switching the cantles took all of about two minutes (most of that time spent walking over to my workshop to get the leather punch to make three new holes for the mounting screws)
I was very pleased with the cantle and feel it is a good value for the money.
For those looking to try there hands at a DIY dress sporran I think it is worth your while to check out Stillwater's offerings.
The last time I looked Jerry was out of stock but I believe he has more cantles on order. I believe he also sells a brass cantle for those looking for something appropriate with day wear.
For those that don't know it by heart, here's the Stillwater site
