    Replacement Pommel stone-Advice needed

I wore my newly purchased silver worked Sgian Dubh out for the first time. Arriving home I noted to my dismay that one of the prongs had been bent out and the stone was missing from the pommel.

What are my options for replacement? I am more concerned for looks and security than for authenticity at this point.

Lots of options depending on the knife and how you feel about it.

You can try to contact the vendor for a replacement sgain. If it's a recent purchase maybe they will work with you. Maybe they can contact the maker for a replacement stone.

You could contact a glass blower in your area who might can do a custom "marble" to fit in the void.

Pour pewter into the void to form a new top. Search for "poured bolster" or check out this thread

Gut the knife and make a new one from the blade. Lots of DIY threads where others have done this.

Take lots of pics if you go the DIY route. We love to see everyone's creations.

Look in the Yellow Pages under lapidaries. You should be able to get a nicely polished stone, a piece of crystal, or-- if you are one of Jay Gatsby's 'rich and careless' types-- a gemstone to replace the missing hunk of glass.

I have a few stones from Scotland- agate, jasper, and marble. What is the size of the stone/glass that was lost?

For anyone who hasn't done this, go to e-bay and enter "loose gemstones" into the search feature.

    You will be astounded.

    You will be amazed.

There is some truly lovely stuff in the "semiprecious" category that won't cost any appendages!

I've also purchased loose stones from Jewelry TV (www.jtv.com).

A good jeweler should be able to replace the stone and beef up the mounting prongs at the same time, to avoid this happening again. I'm wearing a ring that is older than I am; the stone dropped out twice before we finally had the setting reworked.
