As I am not yet kilted, I have found this thread interesting. For me, 0+1=1. Therefore, I should own one kilt. Of course, when I finally acquire a kilt the race is on. Or is it?
Many of the more traditional members of our clan seem to feel that there is no earthly reason to own more than a small handful of kilts. Two or three seems to be about the limit for them, while many of them say you only need one. I'm really going to have to think about this.
I have, however, started on the journey. There is an envelope sitting in front of me labeled "Kilt Fund." I don't know how fast it will fill up, but it's a start and there's no rush because I lost 20-25 lbs last year and hope to duplicate that feat again this year. At 53 the pounds come off slowly, but maybe by this fall I'll be down to a proper weight (at least down below 200) and be ready to really think hard about it. Of course, along with the kilt come hose and sporran and all the other stuff to do it right - oh my
Another reason not to rush is that while I have been thinking I might order an Anderson or McConnell tartan to honor my mother's families something else may be looming in my future. Some of you may have noticed the thread in The Tartan Place forum about a New York State tartan where I have been trying my hand at some designs. If we can push something through our fractious legislature what could possibly be more appropriate for a first kilt?
Wish me luck,
Brian

It does in everybody's house.
At least, those of us who are married. Guys like Riverkilt can buy all they want!

Brian, all in all, I tend to agree with your more conservative friends; a small handful of kilts is enough, and one is actually plenty if you rarely wear one. I have five kilts:
* the first one is a bespoke Robertson Hunting, my first
* the second, a Weathered Robertson Hunting which is a 6-yard kilt I ordered because it was alittle lighter for summer, and it was kind of brownish,
* the third was a breachan faile, 6 yds of Red Robertson I ordered for very formal wear with my doublet (I almost never wear it),
* a Gordon military style from WPG that is great in cold weather and
* the Leatherneck kilt I ordered from SWK for obvious reasons.
That's as much as I need being that I don't wear the kilt every day.
However, for guys like Ron who wear it all the time, it seems obvious that many kilts might be in order. I would probably resort to PV kilts that I could wash if I wore it everyday since washing a kilt is no small task.
So, I agree with you wholeheartedly. I remember the days and weeks of anguish I spent trying to make the final decision to pull the trigger on my first kilt. It's kind of fun, ain't it?

In my case I have 3 bespoke kilts... Leatherneck, a Saffron, and an O'Saffron... My jones is no longer for another kilt, it's for a kilt jacket, a goat hair sporran, and quality kilt hose.. I want to dress my kilts up, right and proper..

Exactly, and I don't plan on giving up being single.
Although, someone needs to ask Crboltz and Steve B how all that works out...
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…
Yes, I have squirrels in my brain…

Shortly after I ordered my first kilt I systematically and scientifically determined how many kilts I need to own to fulfill all possible situations and contingencies. I reviewed and double checked my list for logical and redundancy errors and verified that my calculations were neither under or over my target goal.
I am, of course, delusional and perhaps soon to be compulsive.
delusion /de·lu·sion/ (dĕ-loo´zhun) an idiosyncratic false belief that is firmly maintained in spite of incontrovertible and obvious proof or evidence to the contrary.
compulsion /com·pul·sion/ (kom-pul´shun)
1. an overwhelming urge to perform an irrational act or ritual.
2. the repetitive or stereotyped action that is the object of such an urge.

Hmmm, Ted, I think they're in trouble. There's no Mrs. to put the brakes on. Do you think that two men in the family means you need to add an extra multiplier?

Jim,
Unusually enough for me, I tend to respect the more conservative position of a small handful being enough. That might, of course, be due to the state of my finances because right now I have a hard time seeing myself ever being able to afford more than one or two really good kilts. However, everyday I see tartans I can't help wanting and more pleating styles than you can shake a stick at. I fear that if I had the income commensurate with the habit I'd be the next Hamish.
Regards,
Brian
