I do not get it either, but until I get my certification in hand I do not want to rock the boat. The assistant academy director liked the idea of me in a kilt but she was overruled by the primary director.

I am sure there are a many young man attending their proms kilted out. There is no across the board denials to prevent young men wearing kilts. Granted, it's usually not as common, but there are some areas where common sense prevails (of course common sense is a judgement call,in this case).

My daughter was encouraged to wear her traditional Navajo clothing for her Graduation, considering she graduated from a small town in Texas, where she was one of a couple Natives who went to the school. Ignorence of culture is not lost... If it can be encouraged here in the middle of the Bible Belt, it can be found anywhere.

We can only hope that with education and prime examples that so many of you give in your local communities, that the kilt will be accepted for what it is... a mens garment, that is the Scottish National dress, and has been also worn by the rest of us, proud of our Celtic blood. When I look at the many photos posted by the members of the forum, I see well dressed men and women, who exhibit style and class, that perfectly illustrate proper wear... lol though I think I would personally forgo the "Capri Sun" kilt...lol

Those who try and get denied wearing the kilt, do not dispair, keep on trying, educate, set the example, and help the next one down the road, be able to wear their kilt to the prom, graduation, work, church, or any other situation they might want to dress in their Highland finery.

I played along, but of course it was all in fun and they didn't need permission from me to... ummmm....

I still have my Nehru jacket, I think, preserved as a 60s cultural item or something. I can still get my arms in it, but even the sleeves are 'way short now- you wear yours? I'm impressed! I wonder if the jacket looks good with a kilt?

The last time I wore it was to a funeral a year or so ago. I like how it fits and I have always been a fan of stand-collar coats. It also gives me a good excuse to not wear a tie. If I remember I will try to get a picture taken with my Black Stewart sometime this week. The coat itself may be a bit too long for kilt purposes but we shall see.

As a 24-year veteran in the public high school arena, I must insist that everyone recognize that there are fools in all institutions, and that to paint us all with one brush, as several early posters in this thread have done, is a disservice.

I always attend our prom (which was this past Saturday) in my full-formal PC, this year matched with my new Montreat tartan kilt. (sorry, no pics that I am aware of). One other faculty member's husband was similarly attirred. In '08 and '09 my eldest son wore his kilt to prom.

In every instance, there has been nothing but compliments and encouragement from the Superintendant on down.

I'm pretty sure we'd accept the Capri Sun dress as well. It is far more modest than many of the so-called "dresses" that students have access to at the mall.

Just FYI- both of my parents are teachers, and I am working at getting my teaching degree, as well. I know it's not universal- but it common, sadly.
