Question How Wide Are My Hips?

I first measured them with jeans on and got a loose 38".
Without the jeans I measure a very loose 37", snug to 36" actually.
With very light pants I got 37.5".
    Just measuring my rump I get 19.5 - 20".

I initially ordered my USAK Casual at 38", but emailed Rocky and told him I thought 37" would be better. Now I'm not so sure. One reason I'm ordering this casual kilt before a wool 8 yarder is to wear it a bit and be sure I've got my measurement s correct, but I also do want it to fit at least reasonably well. Before they get started on it I'd like to be sure they've got the right numbers.

    What should I tell them?

I slightly looser hip measurement is better, but too much and the pleats will be a little wavy in the back.

I measure a snug 40 but I usually make my kilts to 41. I find that the waist measurement is more important for a good fit.

Sounds like 37 inches to me. I think you're good, unless you're likely to gain weight.

I HIGHLY recommend you talk to Rocky about your hip measurement. Each kiltmaker has his or her own method for measuring.

I thought this thread was going to be the male variant of a more typically female question:

"Does this kilt make my butt look big?"

To which my unabashed sincere response would be, "No, it is your butt that makes your butt look big."

And, anyway, it should be "how big around are my hips?" , since it is actually a circumferential measurement rather than a linear one. Ok, ok, I know it is nit-picking. Back to the dungeon with me.

Ummm, get SOMEONE ELSE to measure for you...only way to get it accurate...

'course, then they'll know how big your butt is too....

Doesn't matter who measures, the results are always the same.

And since we're talking about 37 or 38 inches, they'll know how small my butt is.

I think Bob Martin used to say to go ahead and measure over your pants with your wallet in your back pocket. I guess he found that that produced a good ammount of ease.

    What is this measurement?

Personally, I don't see the point in measuring over pants. You're not going to be wearing pants under your kilt. Take your actual hip measurement around what you'll be wearing under your kilt, whether it's underwear or your birthday suit. Any adjustment from there can then be made based on a real measurement, not one that's been 'fudged' by random pieces of clothing.

When I was measured for my first kilt, they put 2 fingers behind the tape and they measured over my jeans. I've used the same measurements for 2 other kilts with no problems.
