    Band of the 8th Battalion, Royal Scots

    Notes:

    These bandsmen were Territorial Army volunteers serving with the 8th Battalion Royal Scots in the early 20th century.
    Such a group photograph was only possible when the battalion mustered for annual training; throughout most of the year companies trained individually in their home towns.

    By posing on a slope this band of military pipes and drums displays each individual bandsman to best advantage.
    Most of the bandsmen were extra to the allowed establishment of their battalion and this is reflected in the variety of uniform they are wearing.

    The Volunteer Battalions of the Royal Scots became part of the Territorial Army during 1908 under reforms instituted in 1907.
    The new 8th Battalion was formed from the regiment's old 6th and 7th Volunteer Battalions.
    Many of the men were from East Lothian, with Haddington, Tranent and Prestonpans being particularly well represented.
