Terry, I think you are looking for something neither Mackie nor Glengarry (or any other manufacturer I know of) make in quite the large size you have in mind -- given the pic you showed us.

You are looking for a "doolander" and I had one made by our own Lady Chrystel in a wonderful tweed a year or two ago. It's stuffed in a boot in the hall at home so I don't have it here in Vancouver to photograph for you. I'm sure that Robert can produce a pic or two very quickly if he's about -- or you could PM him.

I love the one Chrystel made me because it truly keeps the head warm and dry in the cold and wet winters of Inverness-shire. Hmmm, well actually it keeps my shoulders dry, too.

    Rex

They are good to deal with.
I'll check them out anyways, one never knows

    Thanks Rex.

I think I might not have been real clear on what I seek (my fault - sorry ). I am actually trying to find something more in the range of a standard balmoral that is inspired by the WW1 CEF bonnet. However, I will PM Robert & ask for a photo
    Thanks.

I did PM Chris earlier this evening to find out if its possible to have one made by Mackie & what I'd be looking at price-wise. I also emailed a similar query to the House of Labhran as well.

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate the assistance!

You know what you want Terry and good luck to you. I could not help having a smile---laugh even----, as poor old Chris(Redshank) had to(well he did not HAVE to, but he very kindly did) go half way round Scotland to Mackie's and get my new bonnet "crown"(?) made smaller!

Steve McVeigh of Caledon, Northern Ireland (ex-Gordons piper) sells ex-British army kilts, hats, uniforms, sporrans etc plus piping equipment and dress. One of the hats I bought from him was this Royal Regiment of Scotland khaki Tam O’ Shanter. It is the smaller type rather than the previous pancake (originals of which are harder to get now) and has the “brightened” 1A tartan patch, plus RRS badge. The one in the photo has the dark green hackle of 5 Scots (The Argylls).

You can find Steve as “Bugpiper” at e-bay (he has a good reputation), but I can give you his e-mail and phone number on a PM if you want.

    Thanks Jock

After an exchange of emails, House of Labhran informed me they couldn't help.
So Chris / Robert Mackie is my last best hope at this point
