LOL! A duct tape belt might be a bit too casual... it seems 2" is really a minimum for a traditional kilt though, eh?

I've checked Old Navy, Walmart, and various other clothing retailers in my area but to no avail. H&M has a wide black belt with a square silver buckle but I'm not sure if it's quite wide enough...

Tool belts in my area are any-colour-but-black and I'm trying to avoid dyeing. The Dewalt belt in the OP would have to be ordered and I'm trying to avoid that as well.

After some of the lovely recommendations on this thread, I've been haunting eBay in hopes of finding a higher end belt in my price range. The local thrift stores have turned up a couple possible belts but they're charging too much money for a well used piece of leather...

Lastly, I also came across a sale over at Union Kilts on a 2" kilt belt for £7.99. It has their logo all over it, which I'm not so keen on but someone else might be more into it:

While on ebay did you look for belt blanks and buckles? I put mine together pretty cheap. If you search by width you'll find more, as most of the sellers list belt blanks under whole hide.

I have looked at blanks, buckles, and dyes but I think that would be a last resort for me. EBay has turned up some interesting things under alternate searches, such as a nice 2" celtic knot embossed black leather belt with square buckle... listed under ladies' belts!

The antique buckle I listed in the OP is now 48% off though, and very tempting. What does everyone have to say about dull/matt/antique finish waistplates as casual wear? Does anyone have pictures of such a belt buckle as part of an outfit?

I just ordered a 2 1/4" belt with a Civil War "Georgia Frame" buckle from this reenactment sutler (scroll halfway down). The "Forked Tongue" buckle looks pretty cool, too:

I like the brushed, matte, pewter and antique finishes. I even wear antique and brush finished buttons, buckles, etc. for formal-ish occasions. I think it looks nicer, and is much easier to keep looking good as small scratches and fingerprints don't show as much. My wristwatch is even in a gunmetal finish, and my wedding ring is brushed finish for that reason....so I guess I'm kind of biased because I'm not big on bling.

Thats a good deal on the dewalt belt. The materials were top shelf--I just didn't dig the big holes.

If you buy a belt from the women's section thats fine...I do too! But make sure any design on the buckle is non-directional. Womens belts go reverse to ours so it might look odd, though alot of people would never even notice.

I'd always been told brown belts and brass buckles for daywear, even with black shoes.

Am making up a belt and buckle right now, brown belt,...but the buckle's going to be copper! Why copper? because I have a long length of copper plate, 3" wide and a few feet long, by 1/4" thick, ...and I don't have any brass!

I have an adjustable kilt belt from Scotweb and am having problems.
Because of the extra leather on one side the belt does not lie right and the buckle angles. Solutions?

Do you have any pics of the belt you are having a problem with so we can see the type of belt you are working with and what the issue is?

Casual belts are more like this

and "Traditional" would be more along these lines

Is the extra leather flapping around? If so a keeper to hold it in place should do the trick. Give us more detail and I'm sure we can help.

I have a 1915 pattern leather belt. (The British army ran out of web in 1915 and used a lot of leather kit for load carrying purposes).

In order to preserve the original leather I use a copy, but the brasswork is original. This is my informal belt - but I do use it as a formal when wearing my safron as I don't have anything else suitable.

I've also got a Saltire buckle that I use on a plain leather belt for casual wear and I may even use an army web belt for 'drinking' occasions.
