I'd imagine that a highland gent would only wear a red poppy on Armistice Day (November the 11th) and/or Remembrance Sunday (the nearest Sunday), and perhaps a few days either side of that time of year, just as per South of the border.

The poppy that we wear for Armistice Day is artificial as they are out of season in Europe in November and as Sandy has said, natural ones wilt quickly. We do not usually wear the poppy at any other time, but a discreet poppy badge for your own very good reason would be fine for the whole year. Although badges are not traditional here, I doubt that anyone over here would notice and most certainly would never comment if they did. In normal circumstances a natural flower in the lapel is always a nice touch.

For what it is worth, I wear a silk Dandelion in my buttonhole Every day.

There is a Scottish version of the poppy although I have not seen it as a lapel badge/tie pin see http://www.poppyscotland.org.uk/
Whilst I appreciate where the OP is coming from I think it is important not to treat 'the poppy' as a 'fashion' accessory.
The 'Eathen in his idleness bows down to wood and stone,
'E don't obey no orders unless they is his own,
He keeps his side arms awful,
And he leaves them all about,
Until up comes the Regiment and kicks the 'Eathen out.

I quite agree.

...and don't overdo it on size. I agree, not silk...but small paper, metal pin, or the real article would do quite nicely, on the few days when it would be appropriate.
The small plastic vials with the rubber tops are too big for this, and might leak...I think they're aimed more at roses. Is there a smaller container, or can you guys think of something that would suffice?

May I suggest:
as:
or:
with a little wet tissue wrapped about the freshly-cut stem?
Rex
Edit: my butler friend suggests you look to e-bay, or to Tussy Mussy (just don't let anybody know you have been there -- wear somebody else's kilt and a Nixon mask )

"Some gave all."
I wish the American Legion or VFW would develop a pewter and enamel pin/tack for Memorial Day / Armistice Day. I always feel terrible when I eventually have to throw away the paper ones (because they've bleached white). That said, I do treasure the discussions I have with my four year old son every time I have him drop a few dollars in the collection tins around this time of year.

They do have a few things available: pin with VFW emblem, stick pins, ladies pins.
Some post/clip-on earrings might be adaptable. However, I think I'd still want to be wearing a paper one on the appropriate days.
In fact, I think I'd better, or my grandmother (member of both auxiliaries) might just return! She was the definitive poppy saleswoman: the downtown businessmen simply reached for their money when they saw her approaching with that gleam in her eye.
