    Another DIY Targe

    Hello All

I just completed another targe today. It is simpler, but far more traditional looking than my first one and I am pleased to say took far less time to complete. Here it is next to my first one (the two-tone targe).

Here is the back of the new one

By the by, I didn't make the beautiful guige (shield strap). Actually it is an R Kilt braided sporran strap!

    Cheers

Nicely done! Very clean and well finished.

    Please stop the insanity!

Any more of this amazing handy work and I'll be forced to make one for myself.

On a side note... would really like some pics of the build process.

    Well done!
I the black & brown is quite a masterpiece, but I appreciate the simplicity of the all black.

Okay, Jamie (and others), I have to ask ...

The targe is really nice looking and obviously you have put a lot of time and effort into it ......but what will you do with it? It is not a typical "lets-walk-down-the-street" accessory.

    KK,

The main reason I decided to make one was for my Renaissance Faire highlander outfit

They also make attractive wall hangings and I imagine one or both will be part of our Burns Night Supper decorations.

One last reason is that it keeps alive a tradition.

Targes, from my understanding, were not mass produced for sale. Instead the individual would make their own shield. I couldn't help but think about the men who in centuries prior crafted their shields as I made mine. As they worked I wonder if they boasted about their skills in battle? Did they pray? Did they think about their own mortality and hope that their shield would be good enough when things really counted in the heat of battle? When they were finished and satisfied with their work did they hang them in a place of honor in their homes?

There is little practical need of targes in our modern day world, but the process of making one brought a little part of history and my heritage to life.

I think that made it worthwhile

    Cheers
