It's funny how grandmother's can get away with that sort of thing. My maternal grandmother wrangled wheels onto B-17s during the war (while her fiancee was off at Kassarine Pass through Anzio). Nobody messed with her.

It is not customary for us to wear poppies except in November, but recently the British Legion has begun marketing some quite discrete little pins that may be something for you to consider. Both are available online through the Legion's shop.

I wish the American Legion or VFW would develop a pewter and enamel pin/tack for Memorial Day / Armistice Day. I always feel terrible when I eventually have to throw away the paper ones (because they've bleached white). That said, I do treasure the discussions I have with my four year old son every time I have him drop a few dollars in the collection tins around this time of year.

According to two friends who are ex-Royal Australian Navy, it is customary to wear a poppy on ANZAC Day. You also see a fair number at Memorial Day services in the US now.

You are, as usual, correct that Australians are wearing poppies on ANZAC day as well as Rememberance Day. Our ANZAC days are becoming bigger as the years pass with a lot more younger people joining in to honour lost relatives. Two other styles of lapel pins are sold by the RSL for ANZAC day, one being the rising sun emblem with a capital A centred, the other being a bronzed slouch hat
