Depending on the snake, the rattle could be anywhere from .5 cm to 6 or 7 cm. If this is a Texas snake we're talkin' 'bout... could be bigger!
According to the Univ. of Texas at Arlington's herpetology department, the largest recorded Western Diamondback Rattlesnake was 92.5 inches, followed closely by a 92 inch specimen, both from the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. I wonder how big those rattles would have been?

No experience with rattles, but I've made several kilt pins and just used an old pin with a spike and clutch back. Cleaned the surfaces well and used hot-melt glue with nary a problem.
Thank yall for the advice, I will post pics and have a thread about the process, which will probably be in a week or so. The rattle I'm gonna use is a 9 button (rattle) roughly 3". I will more than likely use some fishing line to wrap it around the pin and then seal it with some hot glue. We have a lot of rattlesnakes here and if things go as planned I will probably make more. I respect the rattlesnakes, the whole lore about putting a rattle into a fiddle to "keep the devil out of the instrament", Maybe with a rattle on a kilt pin I can keep the devil out of the kilt. I'll keep yall posted
