Sporran Strap????

As much as kilts cost, I just don't want a chain rubbing on them.

I use a simple sporran strap belt from SWK... It's easy to move the sporran either side as required and I just prefer the look, myself.

I have purchased some leather purse straps on ebay which are expandable and find work well for sporrans too. One has a "dog collar" type closure and the other a lobster claw and haven't had problems with either one.

Well, you could also take those wholly unnecessary belt loops off your kilt ...

Whether it's got chain, braided leather, or it's just a leather loop, it'll serve the same purpose, and look equally good as long as you pick your belt carefully. There are a few vendors here at XMarks that can provide a really nice belt, w/o chain or anything, in a few different colors.

This "move sporran for dancing close"...how close we talking? "Blues close", "ballroom close", or "leave room for Jesus close"? I'm asking out of a need for advice for the future...and any tips, pitfalls, or potential "clothing malfunctions" would be good to know about in advance, before finding out that there's such a thing as dancing too close in a kilt!

Oh, and...does the sporran always go to the left when dancing, or is that just a personal thing, or a convention dictated by the group or the dance or something?

One could take the loops off, but if your waist to hips ratio is close to 1:1, then gravity will find a way. I suppose it is each to his own in that respect.

As to moving the sporran, I move mine to the left. The reason for that is that the buckle is on my right front hip. Again, easier to adjust because it is there in front of you - no fumbling behind your back. I have noticed that there is a current trend to larger sporrans, in fact some are called 'big bags of stuff'. Pity the poor girl, who is not expecting it. Again it is each to their own, but it is like the pleat sweep - in the end it becomes second nature.
