There are so many variations and possibilities that your friend's head will spin. The iScottish register of tartans is the best place to look, unlike some advice they are not trying to sell you anything, and are the definitive experts.

You also mgiht consider two other options.

The Geoffery (Tailor) version of Elliot is different and quite nice. It is also embedded with teflon (mine has been spared a stain or two) . It is much darker and for my money, closer to what would be natural dye colors.



the second would be the Angus district which is where the Elliot clan was before being tasked to defned the borders. It is quite similar to Elliot. Below is an image from House of Edgar.

I've an Elliot kilt by Geoffrey's from their Auld Reekie line (as mentioned by JohnE). The blue in the kilt is neither the royal blue of the "modern" colors, nor the faded lighter blue found in most "ancient" colors. I call it "muted" and it is very close to the Ancient Blue line of hose by Hawick Hose (and carried by the Scottish Tartans Museum). I love the colors and usually wear it with a "khaki" brown sporran and belt.

I just received an e-mail from Clan Elliot concerning a weathered Elliot tartan being custom made. The blue is a little more gray than the Geoffrey-made tartan, though the brown and red remain much the same. Its interesting but I don't really care for it myself, though I like most "weathered" tartans.

Great Post. It really caught my eye since I to am an Elliot looking to purchase my first kilt.

Ive always (the last year or so Ive been casually looking) liked the casual a little more than the Modern Elliot tartan but seeing these other variations I may just go with something else.
