I can heartily recommend the Fredericksburg Pub, which is more British than Irish but you can get a Guiness or Smithwicks, or a Scottish Belhaven's. I've seen a few families present each time I've been in. All restaurants and bars in Virginia are smoke free now, so that shouldn't pose a problem unless you decide to eat outside.
Another option is the Smokey Pig in Ashland, just a few miles down the road from King's Dominion (take the Ashland exit west to Rt 1, turn left and go about 50 yards). In my opinion they have the best Virginia BBQ by far. Very family friendly, lots of pig knick-knacks decorating the place to keep the kids interested, and very reasonable prices.
