Beaton Personal tartan
I was just wondering if anyone knows of a mill that makes this tartan. If not will it need to be specially milled?
I just want to see a real sample of the tartan but all I can find are computer generated versions of the tartan.
Thanks

One of our vendors, Scotweb, has it;

Nice tartan, BTW.

You might wanna try Nova Scotia based kiltmakers. Seems that Beatons were thick around Nova Scotia and Nova Scotia kiltmakers may get more call for the tartan than other areas.

Thanks for the quick replies.
I am currently in Japan, but I was hoping like lochcarron, some other mill might picture the tartan as opposed to just the computer generated picture from scotweb.
I will eventually look into swatches but at that, without knowing who the mill is I don't feel overly confident.

Realistically you may have to look at swatches, you always have to even on the more popular tartans, there are several weavers who may well be able to supply your tartan, but each and every weaver has a slightly different colour palette.
It might be diffcult to get a small swatch, but the weavers should be able to supply the coloured threads , which would at least give you a good indication of the colour balance

None of the tartan mills stock this tartan, it would have to be custom woven to order from any supplier. Which, unfortunately, precludes the possibility of seeing a sample swatch.
I will note that the Beaton tartan is based on the MacBeth tartan, so theoretically one can get a swatch of the MacBeth tartan (which is stock supported by most tartan mills) to get an idea of what it looks like. This would only be accurate, though, if one were to get their Beaton cloth custom woven by the same mill that supplied the MacBeth swatch, and instructed them to be sure to use the same yarns in the Beaton as they used in the MacBeth.
We custom weave tartan for customers all the time. Not being able to see a sample swatch before you order is one downside. Being able to order just a single kilt length and not invest in 30+ yards of material to get the tartan you want is a huge upside.

How about checking with D.C. Dalgliesh. They make some of the best cloth out there. Many kilt makers prefer them, and they specialize in small, short-order runs.
I recently had a tank made by Wallace Catanach, and he thought Dalgliesh was the best material he has ever worked with.
Good luck!

Thanks for all your help. I will look into the macbeth and see where I go from there

I just have a quick follow up question. Does the "(personal)" mean that I cannot use this tartan?

Sometimes yes and sometimes no. It depends on whether the tartan has any copyright restrictiosn on it.
What "personal" means in the case of most of these tartans is that it is a tartan designed by/for an individual of that name and doesn't have any official recognition by a clan chief or some other authorizing agent (like a town council for a town tartan, or a CEO for a corporate tartan).
If I wanted to design a tartan and call it "Newsome" I'd of course be free to do so, but it wouldn't be the Newsome tartan because I don't have the authority to make that kind of decision on behalf of all Newsomes everywhere. The chief of Clan Donald, however, does have the authority to say what is and is not an official tartan for the MacDonalds.
