I don't find it to be wrong...I actually kinda like it.
I believe that the intention of Sir Chris's jacket design is to be worn unbuttoned.
In that way the cutaway in not needed for it does not interfere with the sporran.
The second coat appears to be more of a jacket of overcoat that I like, but not wth a kilt. And the extreme cutaway on his right, definitely not for me.
But as someone once said.... "different horses for different courses"
