Matching Jackets & Waistcoats
I have several tweed kilt jackets, without matching waistcoats.
I tend to wear these jackets with doeskin waistcoats or a tweed waistcoat of a similiar but darker colour. From a traditional point of view, do waistcoats have to be of the same cloth and colour as the jacket?

As far as I understand or know, no.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…
Yes, I have squirrels in my brain…

I think the caveat with non-matching is to make sure that they're not close enough to appear as though you were trying to match, but failed.
Navy blue against black tends to look as though you dressed in the dark and couldn't spot the difference.
Something that contrasts (but doesn't clash with) or compliments the colour of the jacket would be the way to go.

It is best to go with a darker waistcoat that way it hides behind the jacket. If it is lighter or a completely different colour then it will constantly be calling attention to itself.

From a traditional point of view: no to both questions.

Normally I would agree, but sometimes you want the waistcoat to call attention to itself. There used to be a fine tradition of wearing 'loud' waistcoats under a plain colored jacket.

I agree totally but that takes a great skill not to look old or stupid. I admit I haven't got that skill, yet I hope. So I take the safer path for the time being.

If done right, I prefer the look of complementing jacket and waistcoat not of the same color or cloth, IMHO, it makes an outfit while looking pleasant and ?gentlemanly?, also looks like the person wears a slightly more formal daywear attire often, also, occasionally always matching jacket and waistcoat screams of 'it's the only suit I have to wear.'
Also to clarify, sadly, I don't have the ability to co-ordinate that look which may be why I like it.
