I had some sort of "issued" bug repellent when I was in the Army down at Benning. Don't know exactly what it was, it came in a plain white plastic bottle, marked "Bug Repellent" in black, but whatever it was it worked!

I had a bottle of the stuff when I came home & used it until it was gone.

Avon cream is the stuff.

Mudges this year have lost many of their natural preditors to the harsh winter, so mor of them! They also only prefer cirtain people, the smell is inportant. My children and wife get bitten, I can be bare legged in the kilt with no problem at all, they are just annoying!

Goint to the Black Isle in July, no trousers will be taken or used, midges or not I will be 100% kilted.............

We don't get midges or skeeters over here, but what is starting to come out are the cedar gnats. Those gnats are real beasties and when they bite, it itches like the dickens, welts up, and the more you itch the bigger the welt. Best thing is their life span; we look at about three weeks of misery out here and then they are gone. We use some stuff from REI but it is very strong.

I'm in Iceland right now, and I can verify that there are plenty of midges here, too! In fact, Dave took a picture of me playing my pipes with a bug head net on. I'll post the pic when I get a chance.

the reason they haven't died out as much as all the so called expert's predicted is the larvae where in water during the harsh winter here and with all that ice covering........ the water was oxygenated higher than average given these wee buggers a extra foothold compared to other species it wouldn't surprise me if the fish here also have had a better off time of it than most years

to deel with the black flys, horse flys and yes those damned mosquitoes use the highest Deet formula I can find (thats limited here in canada to normally a max of %25 or %30 percent if your lucky) now I know of some who have gotten %100 deet from the states... however I've seen that stuff melt plastic watch bands

Now I've heard rumours that moisturizers tend to clog up mosquitoes little straw, but don't know if thats true

We used to take Vitamin B12 and that made an odor, to your skin, and urine, the flying biting bugs (mainly mosquitos) hated, and they left you alone, for the most part.
