Having served in the Marines, and a proud owner of a Leatherneck tartan kilt, I have yet to hear any comments about my kilt wearing... and to be honest, if it represents the Marine Corps, officially or not... It's respected by all... but then again, as my biker friends like to say, .... when you are 6'2" and 260... wearing a kilt.... Few would say anything at all.. LOL

Actually funny that the Marines have become a part of this thread: the local Marine recruiter is going to be doing the Polar Plunge next year in a kilt (at my instigation)...

Actually, this morning, I looked a lot like Jimmy Buffet in a kilt. I wore my black Amerikilt, a black tank top, and a bright yellow Hawaiin shirt (unbuttoned and untucked of course!) Does that qualify as looking damn fine?

I first said, "Kilts are garments, not costumes!" to show people that you can wear your kilt whenever you choose and how you choose, that a kilt can be worn for more than weddings and funerals. It was a response to traditionalists telling me I was offending their culture.
 Analyzing the words is moot.
Kilts evolved as a garment for a very long time before they were declared a national costume. And guess what? They're still evolving!

You could say, "Of course it is. As is the Class "A" and Dress Blues US MARINE uniform, the Sioux Nation hunting apparel, the Tuxedo at a dinner for the dignitaries, the jersey's, shorts and shoes worn by the World Cup players, and so very many others in our experiences. But, what you're wearing is simply ordinary. You are not in a costume of any real definition. It probably sucks to be you, doesn't it?"
