It reminds of Pass and Review ceremonies we did in the US Army.

I wonder if they had medics on standby ready to stick any fall-outs with a saline drip. (The thought of that horror always helped me remember to keep my knees slightly bent).

Nice video. Bit of a shame, though, that the Pipes and Drums didn't get to play.

The ceremony's original purpose was to show the colours to the officers & other ranks of a regiment so they would recognize them on the battlefield.

Thanks for the link, Sandy. I ended up watching the entire Birthday Parade and enjoyed it thoroughly. I found the video's for this year's Trooping also and watched that yesterday. Despite my decidedly democratic leaning I have always loved great ceremonials ans the history lessons were appreciated also.

    Regards,

    Brian

It's a shame that in The Queen of Canada's Capital of Ottawa, the Guard isn't changed daily all year, instead of just a tourist show in the summer.
I certainly remember how cold it gets in Ottawa in the winter. Not sure if you want to subject tourists to that.

From a scion of Hamilton where it's warmer and has a distinctive lack of snow during the winter - and no, it's not because the steel mills melt it first...

What would be really nice would be if they took up the offers of any number of Canadian military units to mount a 24/7/365 guard on the nearby National War Memorial and Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, which as anyone who has worked in the area knows have been grossly disrespected in the past, and only rarely with any publicity.
