I have a similar pair, and they are black. I did not buy them specifically for the Kilt, but have worn them with it. I like the black as it makes the shoes somewhat understated and the attention is drawn away from them.

Hiking boots are a pretty popular choice so IMHO I think it was a good call. Good luck to you and have fun.

Thanks, yeah I tried them on with the kilt and everything, and they look pretty good.

I actually have that exact set of moccasin boots in black, specifically for wearing with my kilts. While they may look a little "costumey" they are comfortable, and usually get positive comments. You might not think it, but they look pretty good with a kilt, despite being non-traditional.

I discovered how comfortable they are almost by accident. Since mine came out of a western wear catalog before these were all the rage at Ren Faires, they actually have fringe that hangs down from the top making them look a bit less Scottish (if that is even possible). While I know they are not historical, neither is that denim jacket the piper has on, and neither is much of what is worn at Ren Faires. By the way, the hiking boots are probably more acceptable to the modernists but about as historical as the moccasins, so go with what works.

While this particular red tartan would actually go well with either brown or black leather (depending on the rest of the outfit), James Scarlett advises that black goes best with blue tartans, and brown with reds.
My personal take on the tartan J D Scott is shown wearing is that it would go best with brown.
But then I am talking about polished brown leather.
Once you go to suede in lighter shades, the parameters change again.
And it is ultimately a matter of personal choice.
With the tartan I have designed for myself (shown above), I would certainly wear brown leather.
    Regards,
    Mike

From my observations as a fairly frequent visitor, there are all manner of boots, shoes and other footwear worn with kilts in Scotland these days. Not all modern day Scots are staunch traditionalists. I would even hazard that the modern looking kiltie outnumbers the tweed and brogues kiltie now, certainly in terms of the number of times the kilt is worn and what is wrong with adopting both styles when occasion suits? Just make sure whatever shoes you wear they're clean...

A much better choice than the knee-high moccasins, which would be insufferably hot when the weather starts to ratchet up the F or C scale in the summer. You just can't 'scrunch 'em down like you can a pair of socks.
