Well, the Swan tartan was listed in the Affleck (of Afflex) slides, which are essentially the modern Vestiarium Scoticum - a collection of pictures of tartans with essentially no reference to where they came from, why they have the names they do, etc.

Still, it's the only connection to my surname that I have at the moment. I have considered going with the tartans of other ancestors, but I (inexplicably) feel driven to do everything I can to show my own surname in my choice of tartan and the sketchy Affleck slides are all I've got.

The fact that it is essentially the same as the Ramsay tartan is just luck, I think, and certainly brings the cost down!

I have read that Swan are also septs of Clans Gunn and MacQueen and descended from Clan Donald, but aligned with Clan Chattan. Seems to me there are plenty of options there.

That I do, but it would be an embarrassment to walk through the pearly gates and have a crowd of my forbears waiting to tell me I got the wrong clan!

Too many options are also not a good thing!

I do have the following Scottish surnames in my family tree as well (this isn't all of them, just a sampling):

    McKean
    Innes
    Bell
    MacDonald
    Lowe
    Craig
    Knox
    Campbell
    Corbett
    Wright

Still, I've become quite attached to the simple blue of the "Swan" (or Ramsay) tartan over the course of this discussion!

It is a lovely tartan. And the blue gets you some glances.

It's nice I admit. Wear it with pride.
