Fly Plaid Question (Last Time?)
OK, this is a "continue" from my previous question about Fly Plaids (FP): http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/f...r-under-59948/
This time the question is - why are some pinning through the FP...
Photo's of Ancienne Alliance (Robert):
http://www.lady-chrystel-kilts.com/s.../fly1-ang.html
http://www.lady-chrystel-kilts.com/s.../fly2-ang.html
and others the FP goes under the brooch:
(see previous posting for ForresterModern's photo) At least it appears to be pinned under.
Would this be due to the fabric weight, 10oz (thinner fabric) verses say 13oz (thicker fabric)? Or more personal preference?
As I previously mentioned, my FP is tailored / pre pleated and fringed and the brooch is the Cathedral Plaid Brooch (http://www.scottishtradingcompany.co..._image&pID=448)

The only three variations I have seen, although other opinions and techniques may (undoubtedly do) exist, would be:
A-pleated portion of fly plaid under left shoulder epaulet and pulled down toward the left breast pocket, with plaid brooch attached to the front fabric but not to the underlying jacket front fabric
B-same as A but with the brooch attached to both the fly plaid front fabric and the underlying front jacket fabric (not recommended as one accidental firm tug and either your jacket may tear, your fly plaid my tear, or you may trash the pin on your brooch, depending on which is the weakest link)
C-same as A except that instead of attaching the brooch to the front fabric of the plaid you instead attach it to the left shoulder epaulet and the underlying pleated portion of the fly plaid to hold it in place (runs some risks of accidental damage if the plaid is snagged or pulled, but the epaulet is usually stronger material construction than the barathea fabric of the jacket front, and more easily repaired if torn).
The only other variation of this I have seen was when the jacket being worn was one without epaulets (like a day tweed of contemprary styling) in which case the wearer used the fly plaid brooch to pin the plaid fabric to the left front shoulder fabric of the jacket (method B above but without the epaulet) and then simply draped the plaid over the left shoulder where the epaulet should have been. I am first not a fan of the dress style plaids for non-formal occasions so would not likely wear one with a tweed day jacket, but instead would try the laird's plaid, a larger and folded rather than pleated version that would simply drape over the shoulder as if one were carrying a picknic blanket there (which it was often, I am told, used as). Many previous threads about the lairds plaid so a simple search should help you if you want to inquire about that option for daywear.
hope this helps.

That helps, I just wasn't sure if there is a "proper" way for pinning. But seeing the lack of responses (I am not complaining) I am guessing that it is a decision of the wearer. Only two more weeks until the wedding, and yes there will be photo's posted

When I was dressing for my wedding, attaching the fly plaid/brooch was the biggest pain in the bahookie!
My (future) Father-In-Law was helping and we eventually got it placed on the breast to where it didn't look silly.
I'll go dig up a pic...
Edit: Here's a close up, let me know if you need more.

Dave:
Thanks for the closeup!!! I gave it a dry run before my post (which is why I posted) and I completely understand the hassle. I think it will take me as long or longer than my daughter to get ready.

I always pin my brooch through the fly plaid and attach it to the breast of the jacket. I have never had a problem. Here's a pic from my wedding, with the plaid. I have not worn that sporran or hose since, but they looked great next to my wife's white dress.
BTW - where in beautiful upstate NY are you?
