#6 'Day' Sporran - Completed (Commission)

    Hi All,
This last week has been a CRAZY one for me. But, in between a sick little boy and batch cutting for some #5 (hunting) sporrans, I somehow still managed to finish the lacing on sporran #6.

This one was commissioned a short while ago by our own BoldHighlander. In construction and design it is very similar (minor improvements) to #2 found HERE.

BoldHighlander wanted a day sporran made up in the same pull-up leather I used for my #5 sporran (hunting pattern).

There will be a dye-to-match sporran strap and belt coming shortly as well.

    Without further ado,
    Sporran #6- front

    side

The interior is dye-to-match veg tan, the front edge is self-edged, burnished like a saddle maker would

    rear

Sorry for the rather nasty glare on this shot... I guess I should have given the leather a final conditioning AFTER shooting pix

This leather is Soooooo soft it was necessary to skive the gusset less than I wanted. The leather (at 4oz) is soft enough that, on it's own, I can stick a dull harness needle through it! It really is butter soft.

The lacing (as on #2) is divided into four quadrants, so the direction of travel always points downward. Everything is finished in a triple loop braid using top grain lacing.

As always, constructive commentary is welcome and invited.

That is the same side... Between the #5's that are being cut now and BoldHighlander's #6, There'll be precious little left soon. I may have to buy another side

As I was telling BoldHighlander, I'd love to make a cafe racer jacket out of this stuff (and my wife's already put HER order in for a new handbag )

Another top drawer job, good sir! That thing is CLEAN.

...can I ask what your leatherworking background was, before you started making sporrans? If this is a question that has already been anwsered, my apologies.

At any rate, all I can say is that any man would be fortunate to own such a piece of craftsmanship.

    Thank you!

I have no formal leatherwork training, I'd done some 'HARD' leather, as it relates to furnishings, and a small amount of re-upholstery of vintage mid-century leather furniture before I started in on sporrans.

I went to school aiming for a BFA in design. In that time I studied art history, painting, ceramics, bookbinding, printmaking, sculpture as well as several other things. I ENDED up with a degree in Comparitive Studies-Philosophy and Religions, with a +60 credit MINOR in Fine Arts Design

I've also done woodworking, metalwork and stained glass out of necessity, when something we wanted couldn't be found (when I was in interior design).

Very nice. The detail is excellent.

Is one of those #5 Hunters going to be a dual color?
