One thing I think you may already know, but since it has not been said, I will, just in case. If you go to Scotland for your trip and get fitted for a kilt while there, it is highly doubtful that you will actually be able to wear that kilt while in Scotland (unless you are there for several weeks), as it takes a while to sew up a custom kilt, even if the tartan is on hand. Your kilt will most likely arrive a few weeks after you return home from your trip. Someone with different expectations may be disappointed with that knowledge. Pick a great tartan, and remember the first rule of xmarks---No Pictures, it didn't happen.
I hope you enjoy both your trip and your kilt buying experience in Scotland. And congrats on beating the big C---that is huge, unimageinably huge.
