    An Elusive Combination

This is my tartan, the Renwick Modern. Now, I've done some looking around over the past 3 months, and I've found that few, if any, major weavers carry this tartan in 16oz worsted. Lochcarron carries the Ancient in 16oz, and Modern in 12 oz, but I can't seem to find the Modern in the weight I want.

Can anyone supply a weaver name? Or any other help at all?

One of our forum sponsors, Scotweb, will weave any tartan to order. Another forum sponsor, the Scottish Tartans Museum, will also have any tartan woven to order.
I've also heard that D.C. Dalgleish will do custom weaves, though I'd imagine their minimum lengths are a bit more than Scotweb's.

    I hope that helps!

It does, but personally I'd rather not order online. You see my dilema. I plan to have my kilt made face-to-face with the maker, so I would like to have at least something to supply her with when I request the tartan.

I imagine you will have difficult time if you don't want to work online.
Most the kiltmakers probably have a favourite weaver or weavers , and it's often best to use the knowledge of the kiltmaker ( male or female!) as they are in a better position to deal with weavers.
There is a cachet attached to Scottish woven tartan, and many kiltmakers actually prefer it. DC Dalgliesh do many of custom weaves for Scotweb and Scottish Tartan Museum, but if you don't have the experience it might be better to go the assisted route!

    Good luck

Like paulhenry has said, your kiltmaker will have a great deal of knowledge (and preferences) about the various weavers and should be able to either order a custom run of your tartan or help you through the process - though you may be stuck buying extra yardage to meet the minimum order requirements of the weaver.
So let your kiltmaker know exactly what you want, and he/she should be able to tell you the best way to proceed.

I've had no problem ordering a special weave kilt "length" from DC Dalgleish , but even if I had to order a special order minimum length , the extra fabric would still have to be paid by the client, the kiltmaker would never be in a position to absorb the cost, of course it's possible the actual kilt price might simply increase to include the additional cost, but the extra fabri would always be given to the client. It's quite usual for the client to ask me to supply all the leftover pieces, infact I happily give them back. There is a case of having just too many tartan pieces in store!!

Any reputable kiltmaker should be able to have your tartan custom woven to order by D. C. Dalgliesh or you can order direct from them. Their minimum order is 4 single width yards. I believe their tartan to be the best available from a commercial weaver.

    Cordially,

[I had a similar situation when I ordered my 1st kilt. I went to Tartanweb and they said I would need to order quite a bit of "extra" fabric. However, they made me a very good offer if I had additional items made at the same time. So, in addition to the tank, I got a 5-yard kilt, and my wife got a kilted skirt, kilted hostess skirt and shawl. Ao, if you do need to order extra fabric, you likely will be able to put it to good use sooner or later.

I will second the recommendation of David above.

Any reputable Kiltmaker will be able to order a special weave of any registered Tartan or any Tartan if the thread count is known.

Dalgliesh are the weavers that most of us use as they are capable and willing to weave short runs of as little as four yards single width.

The cost per yard is more than that for the equivalent amount of fabric from a weavers stock fabric listing but not prohibitive. Most will quote you a price of approx. $58.00 - $78.00 per linear yard. Or $464.00 - $625.00 for an 8 yard kilt's worth.
