Jock,
Thank you for doing this! It is really great to see how it is "really" done and have the opportunity to see the way colours can work together without being excessively matchy.
Since I'm still getting used to seeing a mix of patterns and colours (especially with the tartan of the kilt added to the mix), I had to take things in a little at a time to really see how everything fit together. The first thing I did was hold up two fingers and covered your kilt in the picture - I really think that helps to show how very well the various accessories work together (and was an experiment on my theory that the kilt is "neutral" or, as The Wizard of BC put it, "can stand on its own").
Once I moved my fingers, I was able to see how the hose also brought out the red line in the tartan of the kilt.
I still think first looking at an outfit without thinking too much about the kilt is really a great way for us who are trying to develop a "Highland eye for the foreign guy".
Thanks again, Jock, you're looking great as always!

Oh wow! What am ugly tartan! Couldn't you have picked less of an eyesore?
Just kidding- my formal kilt is the same tartan. I love that whole look. I like to pair red hose with it, as well. Only little tweek I would make is, echoing Matt, a larger sporran. It actually looks to my eye like a kids size sporran. Otherwise you look fantastic!
And a note on matching- I know matching colors isn't exactly something to concern yourself with, but... I find that a well matched pair of hose will really set off the tartan. Red in this instance brings out the MacLeod really well. I like to wear forest green with my Colorado State tartan kilt because the green really compliments the tartan well. So although matching colors isn't something to be particularly concerned about, it can be a benefit.

Careful there Jock, the red hose matches the red in the sett!

Unless there's something I'm missing, it looks good.
By the way...IMHO it looks very good when your girl is wearing something with your tartan on it.

Jock, I think you look very well put together and naturally so, or in other words; it doesn't look "put on." I wouldn't change a thing.

I am looking for a volunteer. Alright, I know never volunteer! But read on-----
Here is the deal. This volunteer will have to be known to me as being from the "every thing must match" school of thought -----I know who some of you are-----who has an adventurous streak and is perhaps from the ranks of the newer kilt wearing brigade . He will need a traditional style tartan kilt(box pleats will do), a tattersall shirt, traditional tweed day jacket (waist coat optional), brown/black brogues(wingtips, but NOT ghillie brogues), traditional day sporran, any colour other than white hose and flashes/garter ties.
Apart from the tweed jacket matching with the waist coat, the hose matching with each other, same with the flashes/shoes (perhaps sporran) NOTHING MUST MATCH in a significant way.Think of my pictures, Sandy's pictures and pictures of that style that you may have seen on this website.
When this volunteer has assembled his kit and PM's me his postal address, I will send him a tie(free of charge)and that he must wear it with the above gear, have a picture taken and publish it here with your thoughts on how you look and feel.
The tie will be along traditional Regimental lines and it will be yours to keep. You will not upset any "Old Soldier" by wearing this tie at any time at any place, but the money from the purchase(by me) of this tie will be going to a very worthy cause.
So who is it going to be? If there are more than one applicant their names will be put in a hat and my dear wife will draw ONE name. The "lucky" fellow's name will be announced on this thread. Offer closes on 20th of August 2010 at 1200hrs BST(Jock time).

Sounds like a good plan Jock, I would enter but don’t own any tweed or tatershal shirts and I’m not that fused about matching either .
A regimental style tie that won’t offend any soldiers’, it wouldn’t be what I think it is? I do not want to give anything away if you want it to be a surprise.

I'll volunteer if I am deemed to meet the above criteria. The only thing I'm missing from the kit is a tattersall shirt, which shouldn't be too hard to find... it would be an adventure for me to mix patterns like tattersall with tartan.
Here's the thread from my birthday, with live action shots of a nice matching outfit.

Yes indeed you qualify and you are the first on the list. If no one else volunteers by the close date, your are it! Thanks for having a go.

Right then it is past the closing time of 1200hrs BST(Jock time).
-----------and the lucky man is------KFCarter!
Sadly that means that CMcG has been unlucky. I am so sorry about that, but that is the way life goes, I suppose.
Thank you both for having a go and the tie will be winging its way across the Atlantic as soon as I have a postal address. So KFC its down to you.
Can I assure every one that this tie can be worn by any one, it is of Regimental style and has the colours of a well respected and proud British military charity, it is in fact their official tie. KFC once you have "done your duty" and if you decide that you don't like it(you may not, after all!)then please give it to some one at Xmarks that will.I look forward to the pictures.

Standing by with tartan, tweed and tattersall at the ready. Even without having seen the tie, I'm confident in saying that I'll be very proud to wear it.
best
