I personally like the look as is. For me the problem is that I mostly wear my kilt during the summer when just a vest is overly hot, let alone putting a jacket over it. If I wear mine more during the late fall to early spring, I'll just have to find a nice jacket and vest.

    Nice tie, Jock.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

Different army, different rules. The South African Army wears brown boots . . . but the kilted regiments make an exception and wear black.
I was only too happy to dye my old brown army boots black, but I still wear either black or brown shoes.
    Regards,
    Mike
The British army wear black boots(desert boot excepted) but the Light Infantry,( the Rifle Brigade, Green Jackets etc) wear black leathers(Sam Black) as opposed to the more common Sam Browne , for example, of most of the British army. Black shoes for the Light Infantry Officers, brown shoes for other units' Officers.

Black leathers have the advantage of almost always being appropriate, more so than brown. I just prefer brown to black, especially in the field - but as I said... That's just me.

As always, Jock and Mrs. Jock look relaxed and confident. Jock never looks like his clothes are wearing him - if you get my drift.

Right then my sporran(in the picture) measurements across the back.

Top to bottom(flap shut): 8.5 inches.
Across at the widest point: 7 inches.
At the entry gap: 5.9 inches.

Small? I am really not sure about that. As I have said, I have never considered that the sporran was too small. I have always regarded larger sporrans rather like "go faster stripes" on cars--- a sad man's accoutrement for trying to make up for a lack of certain physical attributes.

The only problem I can find is that I wasn't there to take the picture.

I love the overall look. The tartan, hose, and flashes work well for me, as do the black shoes, and black sporran.

The only thing that I would even critique would be the regimental tie. It's a lovely tie to be sure, but with this particular outfit I just don't care for it. I find it distracting from the overall look. To me, there are too many "patterns" happening... That is to say, between your tartans, tie, shirt, and wife's coat, I have a little bit of geometric overload... A solid coloured shirt and tie would have remedied that for me. But that is only one man's humble opinion.

Aside from that, a very lovely picture indeed!

The whole purpose of a regimental/club/school tie is to identify the wearer as a member and/or alumnus. It's not supposed to match or blend in with a shirt. See Matt's earlier post.

Think of it like academic regalia. I have heard colleagues complain about their hood & gown colours, but again, the whole point is identification.
