Well it seems that so far I have not done too badly with the review, and that is nice. The real point of this thread was to provoke thought and give, some of you, the confidence to perhaps be a little more "adventurous", or perhaps at least see that there are acceptable alternatives outside your own Non Scots comfort zone. That has been achieved, I think and I am pleased about that.

Do I think in the minute detail that you chaps think? Well no, I don't. Is that because I have worn the kilt for so many years in so many situations with my peers to demonstrate how to do it that I can don my kilt and attire without a second thought? Well yes, I think generally speaking that is true. My wardrobe contains all that I need and no more, so it really is a matter of grabbing the first shirt, tie, hose that comes to hand with not a thought and away I go!

Thanks chaps for contributing to a fun and sometimes, for me at least, a thought provoking thread. However, please don't ever think that" my" way of wearing the kilt and "my" attire is the only way. For sure, its a version of the traditional Scots way of doing it, but it is not the only way. Have fun.

Sir William wrote: “I prefer to wear either all black or all brown leathers.”

My feeling as well. As I mentioned, I have both black and brown shoes.
Which I would wear with a kilt would depend on the colouring of that kilt, but also on the colour of the sporran I had (currently I have none).
I would not mix brown with black when it comes to polished leather.
With an animal skin sporran, it would depend on its overall colour.

The knot I use in my tie is (I think) a half-Windsor. The full Windsor is too big, while smaller knots don’t look right.
    Regards,
    Mike

Jock, you and your wife look comfortable, confident, self assured and ... well... simply great.

This thread (and Sandy's similar one) do a great service to those of us who were conditioned from an early age to be wary of mixing patterns, etc. Thank you!

I am looking for a volunteer. Alright, I know never volunteer! But read on-----

Here is the deal. This volunteer will have to be known to me as being from the "every thing must match" school of thought -----I know who some of you are-----who has an adventurous streak and is perhaps from the ranks of the newer kilt wearing brigade . He will need a traditional style tartan kilt(box pleats will do), a tattersall shirt, traditional tweed day jacket (waist coat optional), brown/black brogues(wingtips, but NOT ghillie brogues), traditional day sporran, any colour other than white hose and flashes/garter ties.

Apart from the tweed jacket matching with the waist coat, the hose matching with each other, same with the flashes/shoes (perhaps sporran) NOTHING MUST MATCH in a significant way.Think of my pictures, Sandy's pictures and pictures of that style that you may have seen on this website.

When this volunteer has assembled his kit and PM's me his postal address, I will send him a tie(free of charge)and that he must wear it with the above gear, have a picture taken and publish it here with your thoughts on how you look and feel.

The tie will be along traditional Regimental lines and it will be yours to keep. You will not upset any "Old Soldier" by wearing this tie at any time at any place, but the money from the purchase(by me) of this tie will be going to a very worthy cause.

So who is it going to be? If there are more than one applicant their names will be put in a hat and my dear wife will draw ONE name. The "lucky" fellow's name will be announced on this thread. Offer closes on 20th of August 2010 at 1200hrs BST(Jock time).

Sounds like a good plan Jock, I would enter but don’t own any tweed or tatershal shirts and I’m not that fused about matching either.
A regimental style tie that won’t offend any soldiers’, it wouldn’t be what I think it is? I do not want to give anything away if you want it to be a surprise.

Thanks for not letting the cat out of the bag Jordan and yes you are probably along the right lines! I have a choice of ties from two different organisations, so lets see what happens.I am deliberately keeping the assorted colours quiet, just to see how the "matching brigade" finally turn out! By the way there is nothing in the rules that says that you can't hire, beg , borrow , or the other thing, your kit now is there?

I'll volunteer if I am deemed to meet the above criteria. The only thing I'm missing from the kit is a tattersall shirt, which shouldn't be too hard to find... it would be an adventure for me to mix patterns like tattersall with tartan.

Here's the thread from my birthday, with live action shots of a nice matching outfit.

Yes indeed you qualify and you are the first on the list. If no one else volunteers by the close date, your are it! Thanks for having a go.

It's all good, Jock. What else could I say as you were the inspiration for my purchasing a tattersall (and a muted gingham shirt) to wear with my tweeds and kilt. I like the watch chain, too!
