The second actually was in Japan, in front of the Bujinkan Hombu dojo in December '99, just before the grandmaster's birthday party. That's not a modern kilt -- it's a feileadh mor worn with modern shirt and cable-knit sleeveless wool jumper. That particular plaid actually had been my blanket for the past few nights; dimensions about 5 feet by 5 yards.

I know what you mean about the Kilt being seen as much more formal that it is actually being worn. I have worn my Kilt with a T-Shirt and been asked what I was "all dressed up for". I went to an event that turned out to be a piping concert and was in my Kilt (and the much maligned puffy shirt in black), only to be asked several times if I was performing. The really puzzling bit was that when I told them I was not a performer, more than one person said oh you should get up there anyway. Like simply wearing the Kilt bestows magical music/dance/poetry ability on the wearer.

I have been asked where I was performing when in a Sportkilt hiking kilt, polo shirt and sandals, running to the store for a loaf of bread. Go figure.

Remember..
Over the years I have been asked by folk of all type "Does the kilt make you feel ____?" Fill in the blank-empowered, more Scottish, hollywoody, sexy...
All I can say is remember-YOU wear the kilt, the kilt does NOT wear you.
And you are wearing that one.

We recently had a holiday in Edinburgh and whilst walking around the zoo in my kilt dressed casually, a little girl of about three pointed at me and shouted "Mammy! It's the piper man! The piper man!" Which I found absolutely hilarious, bless her!

Steve, that’s like the way kids respond to my white beard.
I get a broad smile, and then the little one whispers a question to mommy or daddy.
They want to know if I’m Father Christmas!
Wonder how they will respond to the beard/kilt combination.
Regards,
Mike

Maybe you could be Father Hogmanay!
