    Dundreich Hill

Travelling from my home in Hawick to Edinburgh I would normally go via the Soutra Pass, where the road follows a pass between the Lammermuir and Moorfoot hills. On Sunday our little group of two men, two ladies and two dogs met at a roadside layby a few miles north of Peebles to climb Dundreich Hill, one of the highest peaks in the Moorfoots. Here we leave the shore of Portmore Loch behind as we begin our ascent.

As we climbed higher, the whole of Portmore Loch could be seen in the camera viewfinder.

We had a good view towards Bowbeat Wind Farm

Jill, Ben and Fiona at the summit of Dundreich.
    More to follow shortly.

The concrete Ordnance Survey triangulation post made a good place to rest the camera and set the timer to take a group shot beside the cairn. There was a nest of wasps in the summit cairn. Altitude 2,045 feet or 622 metres above mean sea level.

From here there was a good view north towards Edinburgh and the Firth of Forth. The Salisbury Crags and Arthur's Seat in Holyrood Park can be seen in this shot.

    Lunch stop

Looking north-east there is a glimpse of part of Gladhouse reservoir and beyond is the town of Gorebridge.

Westwards are the rolling Southern Upland hills as far as the eye can see. The highest hill in the background is Culter Fell in Lanarkshire.

We descended by a different route, offering a view of Portmore Loch from another angle.

This route took us along the full length of the east shore of Portmore Loch.

It was Jill's birthday, so afterwards we went to Gorebridge for an Indian meal. Here with the birthday girl is her son Sam who joined us for the meal. Sam works in Marchbrae kilt shop on Edinburgh's Royal Mile and wears a kilt to work every day of his own choice.
    That's all folks!

    Great shots there Alex.

I especially like the distance shot towards Arthur's Seat and Salisbury Crags.

A very nice hike. Thanks for sharing.

Again, Alex, you keep us entertained with great shots. Where are you off to next? Oh, don't answer, I want to be surprised!

But Alex, where was young Sam’s kilt during the hill climb?
    Nice pictures, anyway.

Sam didn't come on the hill climb with us. He joined us afterwards for the meal.

Thank you, Alex! I always very much enjoy your pictoral postings. My wife, Ann-Marie, and I want to visit Scotland soon. Specifically, east of Loch Lomond as that is from where my forbearers hail. I was surprised to see your party in shortsleeves, especially at altitude. What was the temperature during your hike?

We all started off with our arms covered but soon took off our jackets as we became too warm in them. My lightweight jacket fitted inside my backpack.
The afternoon temperature had been forecast to be around 14c 57f but was probably closer to 21c 70f.

Sorry. I just presumed he was the young man on the hill with you. Was he wearing a kilt? (The picture doesn’t show his legs.)
